Sturmgeschütz Brigade 280 was created later in the war and as such the unit did not have many members that were bestowed some of Germany’s highest awards.

Even though the unit was involved in some remarkable victories in 1944 both in Russia and Holland only a small number of members received top awards. A total of 2 Knights Crosses, 3 German Cross in Gold and 1 Army Honour Roll Clasps were ever awarded. The members to receive these awards were as follows:

Knights Cross

  • Major Kurt Kühme on 9 December 1944 as the commander of the brigade for his leadership of the unit in it’s actions in the area of Arnheim and later for his leadership in the fighting in the Saarpfalz area.
  • Oberwachtmeister Josef Mathes on 4 October 1944 as the gun commander and platoon leader of the 2nd platoon in the 3rd battery of the brigade. He was awarded the KC for his actions in the fighting in the Arnheim area.

German Cross in Gold

  • Oberwachtmeister Kurt Herrmann on 28 August 1944 as a section leader in the 2nd battery.
  • Oberwachtmeister Herbert Huse on 29 February 1944 as a section leader in the 2nd battery.
  • Oberleutnant Albert Stollmann on 15 December 1944 as the commander of the 1st battery.

Army Honour Roll Clasp

  • Leutnant Fritz Meining on 17 June 1944 as Platoon Commander 2nd battery.
