A number of German units that were involved in the Battle of Arnhem are often overlooked in publications. These obscure, yet important units played a vital role in the destruction of the British 1st Airborne Division north of the Nederrijn in September 1944. This publication will focus on three such units: Sicherungs-Regiment 26 (Security Regiment 26) Infanterie-Sicherungs-Bataillon 908 (Security Battalion 908) and Regiment ‘Haenisch’. All three units were German Security troops (Line-of-communications), 2nd rate troops who surprisingly were involved in offensive action both during the Battle of Arnhem and in the following days.
Further research is required from Dutch and German archives however significant information, documentation and photographs have been identified. This includes personal information from the family of Oberst Knoche, commander of Sicherungs Regiment 26. However further information is welcome on any of the units listed for this publication.
